Import Opportunities in the Footwear Industry
Mexico: An Opportunity for Importers
The Mexican footwear industry is in the midst of significant change at the present time. A few years ago, Mexico had been one of the few countries that managed to increase its share of exports to the US, thanks to NAFTA. But now China is racing to out compete not only Mexico but every other country that wants to gain access to the lucrative US market.

While NAFTA helped expand Mexican footwear exports, and achieved rapid success doing so, the trade agreement is a victim of attractive price points offered by Asian importers.

Yet, Mexico has a developed exporting capability. This capability can be strategically modified to develop an exporting industry similar to Italy's or Spain's with regard to targeting niche markets and segments that can compete successfullyagainst the China factor.

The volume of imports to Mexico of finished footwear products is growing. Duties, to some degree, contained the growth in footwear imports from China, but experts point out that such imports are still arriving in Mexico through other Asian countries or even through the US itself.

Obtaining success importing into the Mexican market is a pricing or discounting game. Those who can offer an attractive margin, will play; others, will be left out.
